What Open edX is
Open edX is the open-source platform originally built to run edX. It is designed for structured courses delivered to large numbers of learners simultaneously — the MOOC model — with course authoring, grading and analytics built around that.
When Open edX is the right choice
- Cohorts are large and take the same course at the same time.
- The course structure is deliberate and sequenced rather than a library of material.
- You are building a course platform as a product, not adding training to an existing site.
- You need custom activity types and have the appetite to build them.
When it is not
- Many small courses with varied assessment. Moodle handles that pattern with far less operational overhead.
- No infrastructure capability. Open edX is a multi-service platform. It needs an owner, and that is a running cost.
Be clear about the operating cost
The honest answer about Open edX is that deployment is the easy part. It is several services that have to be kept running, upgraded and monitored. We would rather set that expectation before a project starts than explain it afterwards — and if the requirement genuinely fits Moodle, we will say so.

What does running Open edX actually involve?
More infrastructure than most people expect. It is a multi-service platform, not a single application, and it needs someone who owns its operation. That should be in your budget from the start.
Can we customise the learner experience?
Yes. Theming covers appearance, and custom XBlocks let you build activity types the platform does not ship with.
